Historically Significant, circa 1897
Our beautiful Victorian Queen Anne style home is nestled
among some of the grandest homes on Picton’s Main
Street.
Although the home is dated circa 1897, information gathered
from archival records indicate that the home had its
beginnings as early as 1854. The original structure
experienced many additions and changes up to, and including
1897, bringing it to its current beauty and grandeur.
The home has been owned by many prominent Pictonians:
among them, Prince Edward County sheriff Henry J. Thorp
from 1863 to 1873. From 1873 to 1888, MP Walter Ross
and his wife Calista took up residence. Local Picton
council member and general store owner, Horace Wilcocks
and his wife, Augusta, lived in the home from 1897 to
1911. And from 1929 to 1974, Frances Emma Pearce resided
here. Her son, Dr. John Pearce, whose gentle kindness
was extended not only to his patients but to all living
things, operated his family practice from what is now
the family room.
The home has been lovingly preserved by its previous
owners: original woodwork, marble fireplace, etched
window panes of the French doors, uniquely designed
hardwood flooring made by Picton shipbuilders, three-levelled
turret, and second floor veranda and sun room.
