Guests are invited
to take full advantage of the grounds – relax
on the front verandas, sit in the cool shade of the
gazebo, spend peaceful moments beside the pond, or walk
about and enjoy the many colours, shapes, and fragrances
of the numerous shrubs and flowers that grace the gardens.
The gardens are
an ideal resting place for nature lovers to enjoy the
numerous species of birds attracted to the yard by birdbaths,
birdhouses, and feeders. In fact, Prince Edward County
is a renowned birding area of Ontario.
The gardens present
a wonderful setting for wedding photos.
Our property is graced by what is alleged
to be the largest and oldest Ginkgo biloba
(Ginkgoaceae) tree in North America and is reported
to be nearly 150 years old. Ginkgo trees are living
fossils and date back at least 270 million years, as
evidenced by the earliest known leaf fossils of the
variety. These trees were rediscovered in 1691 in China
and were brought to North America in the late 1700's.
Individual trees may live as long as 3,000 years and
the seeds and leaves are used in medicine throughout
the world. |
